Image Space Media raises extra $1M to turn photos into cold, hard cash

Image Space Media, formerly Picad Media, has raised an additional $1 million from existing investors, according toan SEC filing.

The startup overlays text ads on Web images, similar to those seen on Google’s YouTube and other video-sharing sites. Publishers can integrate a snippet of JavaScript and start monetizing their images, while advertisers can choose from a cost-per-click (CPC) or cost-per-impression (CPM) model to serve their text-based ad. Image Space offers an analytics tool for publishers and ad-creation tools for advertisers.

Founder Kevin Tung laterconfirmed the funding to TechCrunch, a tech blog.

While the idea of serving ads over images is far from ubiquitous, it’s not entirely new. The most popular player in the space is GumGum. GumGum started in 2006 as a service to help content owners track and monetize their photos, but eventually morphed into what is essentially an ad network for images. It has signed up popular publishers TMZ, Internet Brands, AskMen, and Glam.

Back in January, Image Space Media raised $2.9 million from New Atlantic Ventures, Ridgeline Capital, and Michael Gordon, having launched at the TechCrunch50 conference earlier in the year. Tung has stated the startup is planning to raise a complete Series B round in 2011.

The Cartographer app brings gorgeous custom and offline maps to your iPhone

Mobile maps have never looked this good on the iPhone. The Cartographer is a new app ($3.99 on the iTunes Store) that brings support for custom Google Maps, as well as the ability to download maps for use offline, all in a slick vintage user interface.

It’s one of those rare apps that make you sit up and take notice at first, thanks to its unique design and emphasis on usability, but remains consistently useful by delivering features you’ll use often. That’s why we’re choosing the Cartographer as the next innovative app for VentureBeat’s Mobile App Spotlight.

With the app, you can view, edit and create custom Google Maps (Google calls them “My Maps”) right on your phone — a feature that’s been inexplicably missing from Apple’s default Google Maps app. Custom maps are useful because you can do things like mark down points of interest (along with notes) to help guide you during vacation. Other apps have popped up that give you access to custom Google Maps, but none of them look as good as The Cartographer.

Additionally, you can select map regions and specific zoom levels to download to your device for offline access — enabling you to view maps even when you don’t have network access.

In my testing, the app managed to find all of my custom Google Maps entries with ease, and I found it to be faster than other competing apps. At the moment, the app still launches the iPhone’s Maps app to route directions, but the developers tell me that will eventually be integrated.

The app was developed by A Tasty Pixel, makers of other iPhone apps like Loopy and Talkie. Based in a motorhome traveling across Europe, the developers say that The Cartographer came about because they couldn’t find a suitable app for managing their travel notes. They were inspired by other gorgeous iPhone apps, like Apple’s Books app and Sophiestication’s Groceries app, to move beyond the default app user interface and try for something unique.

Next up for The Cartographer is an iPad version, which A Tasty Pixel’s Michael Tyson considers the perfect platform for the app. Its gorgeous user interface will certainly play well on the iPad’s larger screen. The developers intend to make the iPad version universal, so existing users won’t have to pay for it again. Additionally, they’re considering a stripped-down version of the app to let curious users test it out for free.

Developers: Want to get your app featured like The Cartographer? Thensubmit your app for consideration!

TheIntel AppUp developer program is sponsoring VentureBeat?s Mobile App Spotlight. However, VentureBeat?s editorial staff selects apps for the program according to its customary editorial standards, without input from Intel.

On the GreenBeat: Molycorp stock rises on rare earth scarcity, Verizon launches smart home pilot

Here’s the latest action we’re following on the GreenBeat today:

Warren Buffet’s MidAmerican Energy to install wind power in Iowa — The company, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, plans to install 593 megawatts of wind power in Iowa, enough to power 190,000 homes, CNET reports.. The project will consist of 258 wind turbines supplied by Siemens Energy, to be installed throughout the state by the end of next year.

China defends cutting rare metal exports, boosting Molycorp stock — Rare metals are used in wind turbines and hybrid cars, so it’s bad news for both that prices for those metals have been soaring since this summer, when China slashed its exports by 40 percent. The country, which produces about 97 percent of the world’s metals for high-tech products,is defending its decision to the global community, which is calling the move a potential World Trade Organization violation, Reuters reports. On the other hand, U.S. rare earth mining company Molycorp’s stock is soaring, Earth2Tech notes. The company plans to start mining again in California next year and was also bolstered by a joint venture with Japanese mining firm Hitachi Metals.

India to quadruple renewable energy capacity – The country plans to reach the goal of 72,400 megawatts of power generation capacity from clean energy by 2022, the Wall Street Journal reports. India is expected to be the second-largest cause of global energy demand rising by 2035, with its consumption more than doubling by that time.

Verizon launches home monitoring and controls — The company announced a trial phase to become available in the first half of 2011. The service lets you lock doors remotely and set, adjust and control lights, smart thermostats and smart appliances using Fios, Verizon’s fiber-optic network.

Small Business Owners Report Less Satisfaction With Banks

Small business owners desire certain things from a business bank — specifically, collaboration, openness and a good working relationship. However, a recent study from consumer satisfaction research firm J.D. Power and Associates reveals those needs are going unmet.

The U.S. Small Business Banking Satisfaction Study showed that small businesses’ overall satisfaction with their banks has dropped to 711 on a 1,000-point scale, down from 718 last year. The survey measured customer satisfaction with the overall banking experience byRead More

SEC looking at secondary markets for Facebook and others

The secondary markets where shareholders of hot private companies like Facebook and Twitter can sell shares their could be facing greater government scrutiny, according to multiple news reports.

The New York Times published a story last night stating that the Securities and Exchange Commission ?has sent information requests to several participants in the buying and selling of stock? in Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Zynga. The story didn?t have many details about the investigation, and it was a bit strange when SecondMarket, the leading marketplace for these types of shares, said today that it has not been contacted by the SEC.

A spokesperson from SharesPost, a similar marketplace, declined to comment on the Times story when I emailed them, except to say that ?since its launch, SharesPost has made efforts to keep the SEC’s Staff apprised of the evolution of its marketplace and we have made every effort to structure our activities to be compliant with previous.?

Now the Wall Street Journal has more details about who?s being investigated and why. The SEC is ?focusing partly? on the funds that pool investors together to buy these private company shares, allowing them purchase shares companies over the 500-shareholder threshold. If the threshold is crossed, private companies are required to disclose more information to the public. The SEC is also looking at whether the tech companies are meeting their financial reporting requirements and at whether the people selling shares (who are often former employees) need to be registered broker-dealers, the Journal says.

To be clear, it sounds like this is all very preliminary — a spokesperson for one of the funds mentioned by the Journal said it?s premature even call this an ?investigation?. But it?s certainly that as these markets grow, the government is taking notice.

Will charging infrastructure be the electric car?s speed bump?

This year — and next — will be a busy one for arrival of electric cars. The Ford Focus Electric and Coda’s sedan are slated for launch by 2011. The Nissan Leaf is slowly making its way to buyers in the U.S. and Europe, the Wheego Whip and LiFe are on sale in New York, and the partially electric Chevrolet Volt is on dealer lots now.

Yet Tesla Motors, the one company that’s been ahead of the pack in actually selling electric vehicles, saw its stock price drop 16 percent today.

The Silicon Valley-based maker of the all-electric sports car Roadster saw its stock drop today in part due to today’s expiry of the 180-day lockup period that kept insiders from selling their shares. But it also fell 8 percent Thursday after being downgraded to a “sell” by analyst Carter Driscoll of Capstone Investments. One of the reasons for his new rating was the lack of publicly available charging infrastructure, which he predicts will push green car buyers more towards hybrids and plug-in hybrids.

It’s not an issue unique to Tesla, Driscoll told me.

“While the infrastructure is clearly growing daily and there’s a lot of state support …it’s going to be a number ofyears before the infrastructure is widely developed and widely recognized by the buying public to alleviate some of therange issue concerns,” Driscoll said.

Lack of charging infrastructure has also been reportedly cited as the reason for Nissan Leaf delays in markets in Maryland and Washington, D.C., according to All Cars Electric.

But Paul Scott, cofounder of advocacy group Plug In America (and an electric car owner himself), argues it’s not an issue because most people will do the majority of their charging at home.

“We could get by with zero public infrastructure and the cars would be fine. Millions of Americans would be totally fine charging at home,” Scott said. “Any public infrastructure is just icing on the cake. It’s nice but not necessary.”

Scott also pointed out that the plug for the Tesla Roadster doesn’t jibe with the current charging standard J1772, which was developed after the Roadster came out — so public chargers can’t currently service the Roadster. Scottexpects Tesla’s 2012 Model S sedan to be chargeable with the new standard.

The Department of Energy’s director of Vehicle Technologies Program Pat Davis also argued that home charging will suffice on the DOE’s blog last week:

“Today, there are very few public charging stations out there, as of the middle of December in 2010. And that?s really okay because at this point most people are going to be charging their vehicles locally, typically at home.”

Even though charging infrastructure companies like Ecotality and Coulomb are rolling out lots of chargers fueled in part by government funds, the projects are still underway. Ecotality is rolling out 15,000 chargers in 16 cities, a project that is slated to finish in summer 2011. Coulomb plans to allocate and install 5,000 chargers nationwide by October 2011.

NRG Energy CEO David Crane told me last month that the company discovered Tokyo only needed 60 charging stations to be declared fully wired — and expects that the sprawling city of Houston, where NRG is launching charging infrastructure with monthly rates, would need anywhere from 50 to 150 chargers.

Having launched earlier, hybrids do have a better toehold on the green car market than electric cars and will likely continue to do so. Cars like the Toyota Prius have been around longer and eliminate consumer fears of running out of battery, also known as “range anxiety.”According to a J.D. Power & Associates report, 5.2 million hybrid or electric cars will be sold in 2020 (or 7.3 percent of the overall car market), and the vast majority — 3.9 million — will be hybrid electric vehicles, with 1.7 million of those forecast to be in the U.S. And of the 1.3 million battery electric vehicles sold in 2020, the U.S. would account for only 100,000 of those.

Ford is expecting most of their green car sales to come from plug-in hybrids and hybrids — which made sense to me after I test-drove a Ford Focus Electric and was warned on a blistering hot Texas summer day that running the air conditioner would deplete the battery faster.

There are other factors that can keep buyers from going for an all-electric car, of course. They’re pricier than many gas-powered vehicles, and it’s still not clear how long batteries last and whether people are willing to change their driving habits for it. Though analyst Driscoll sees charging infrastructure expanding in future years, he sees the current dearth of charging stations as a deterrent to electric car sales right now.

“It is one aspect of the auto purchase decision that is an hindrance to theadoption of EVs (electric vehicles),” Driscoll said.

Scott of Plug In America disagrees.

“There are tens of millions of people for whom it’s not an issue at all. (Electric) carmakers will not run out of customers for years to come,” Scott said.

Apple sells 1M Apple TVs, can?t be bothered to announce it

Apple confirmed today that it has sold 1 million copies of its Apple TV media player.

The company predicted last Tuesday that it was going to hit the 1 million sales mark later that week. Maybe that?s why Apple didn?t actually announce the milestone via press release — instead, the news came out when AllThingsDigital?s John Paczkowski took the initiative to ask the company if it actually crossed the threshold it had predicted, and Apple said yes.

The new design, new features, and reduced $99 price were supposed to move the Apple TV out of the company?s ?hobby? category and turn it into a serious moneymaker. With 1 million devices sold in three months, the plan seems to be working, though it remains to be seen whether Apple can really take the lead in the Internet-connected TV category the way it did with music players, smartphones, and most recently tablets — in fact, device-maker Roku says it’s nearing the same sales milestone.

One big obstacle to Apple TV?s mass market appeal is the company’s limited success in convincing TV networks to price their new episode rentals at 99 cents. Chief executive Steve Jobs successfully forced music industry executives to accept his terms for selling music thanks to the dominance of Apple devices and the iTunes store. I suspect Apple TV will need a much larger audience before Jobs can do the same thing to uncooperative networks. (Not that movie and TV episodes sold through iTunes are limited to Apple TV owners.)

On the other hand, the new Apple TV is certainly off to a more auspicious start than Google TV.

On the GreenBeat: California electric car rebates could run dry; Carsharing catches on with major automakers

Here’s the latest action we’re following on the GreenBeat today:

California’s electric car rebates could run out — The state fund that pay $5,000 rebate California offers for zero-emission cars is currently funded with $8 million, enough to pay out 1,600 car buyers. But the amount of money availabledoesn’t match the pace of electric car rollouts, and would likely run out by mid-2011, according to advocacy group Plug In America, the Los Angeles Times reports. The state’s financial crisis could also mean the funds won’t be there to support the rebates in the future, the state’s Air Resources Board said.

Carsharing catching on with major automakers — Daimler’s Car2go pilot program in Austin, Tex. has taken off to 15,000 participants in the first year, and PSA-Peugot-Citroen and BMW have launched similar programs, Autoblog Green points out. Zipcar has filed for an IPO and acquired Streetcar (Zipcar MINI Cooper pictured, left); carsharing-friendly legislation has also been passed in California, Earth2Tech notes.

Researchers make thermoelectric breakthrough — An international research effort has resulted in a discovery that could result in more efficient ways to create electricity from waste heat like industrial emissions and car exhaust, CleanTechnica reports. The breakthrough involves the thermoelectric effect, which involves the creation of voltage by arranging of materials of different temperatures adjacent to each other.

Federal regulators approve cost sharing for Midwest lines — The Federal Energy Regulation Commission has decided that new transmission lines in the Midwest must be paid for by all who will benefit from it, Greentech Media reports, concluding that the decision will be good for renewable energy since it will allow transmission lines for wind power in the Midwest to be built — though there will likely be future battles over how big a portion individual wind farms will have to pay in conjunction with developers.

SunPower completes sale of 44-megawatt solar park – The company announced it has completed the sale of its Lazio, Italy Montalto di Castro solar park to a group of international investors that includeMetLife, Fondo PPP Italia and Voigt & Collegen. SunPower designed and built the solar power plant and will continue to provide operations and maintenance.

Merry Christmas, Zynga: CityVille eclipses FarmVille as the world?s biggest game

In just 22 days, Zynga’s CityVille has eclipsed FarmVille as the world’s biggest game.

Today, CityVille added an astounding 6.9 users to end the day at 61.7 million monthly active users, compared with 56.8 million for FarmVille, according to stat collector AppData. Before today, FarmVille, also made by Zynga, was the biggest social game on Facebook, and it also happened to be the biggest game on any platform in terms of the sheer volume of users.

Now the challenge will be to make money from all of those users. If Zynga hangs on to them, it stands a chance of becoming a far bigger player in social games than it already is.

When CityVille took off shortly after its launch on Dec. 2, it was clear that its growth path was going to break all records. We knew this would happen, but it’s still pretty astounding. It’s going to be a pretty Merry Christmas for Zynga. Zynga’s traffic on Facebook has now soared to 261.6 million monthly active users, which is probably near its all-time peak. In November, Zynga had around 198 million monthly active users.

Zynga actually hit its peak in the spring, about the time when Facebook cracked down on game communications that were perceived as spam-like. That meant that it was harder to make games take off in a viral way, without spending money on advertising. Zynga’s growth plummeted and it hasn’t replaced those lost users until now.

The turnaround is remarkable and shows what can happen when you have a good game. CityVille is a city simulation like SimCity, but far simpler and more social. For instance, you can open a chain of stores and operate them as franchises in your friends’ towns. Mark Skaggs, head of the team that built the game, told us in an interview that the concept was to create a game that felt like you were playing it in real time.

The game also benefits from Zynga’s usual advertising on Facebook and its ability to cross-promote the game to its other Facebook users. The questions now are, will users will stick around and will they will spend money? Zynga’s games are free-to-play, where users can play for free and spend real money on virtual goods such as tractors in FarmVille.

Founded in 2007, Zynga has become one of the largest gaming companies, with more than 1,300 employees. Legendary investor John Doerr of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers said Zynga was easily the best investment that his firm has ever made. The social networking game maker is already the largest app developer on Facebook. And some recent valuations show thatZynga is actually valued above $5 billion, larger than Electronic Arts, one of the largest video game publishers in the world.

Zynga is trying to build up its user numbers by expanding to new platforms such as mobile games in Japan. It is also expanding its social games to non-Facebook web sites and translating its games into other languages. The company has been buying about a company a month to get more talented game developers. But the No. 1 thing it has to do to keep growing is commission new games like CityVille.

LTE 4G phones for Verizon on the horizon from HTC, Samsung, Motorola

The first wave of smartphones for Verizon’s LTE 4G network will include entries from HTC, Motorola and Samsung, judging from the rash of early hardware photos hitting gadget sites over the past few days.

We’ve known for some time that Android manufacturers were working on LTE 4G phones, but the photos in the wild tell us that they’re closer to release than we’ve previously thought. Manufacturers are most likely gearing up to finalize their hardware to show off at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in two weeks.

In fact, it’s pretty certain that HTC will show off its Verizon LTE phone at CES, and that it will be the first manufacturer to do so. A few days ago, the company launched a site which teases that it will be “the first to 4G, again” — a reference to the Evo 4G and G2, the first 4G phones on Sprint and T-Mobile respectively. Prior to that, several gadget sites received leaked photos of the company’s upcoming “Mecha” device, which may land on Verizon as the “Incredible HD.”

A few days ago, Samsung’s LTE 4G entry was leaked to Gizmodo, and the Wall Street Journal reported that Motorola was officially working on a LTE phone for Verizon (not that there was ever any connection).

Verizon launched its supposedly super-fast LTE 4G network on December 5, but at the moment only a few 4G USB modems can take advantage of it. Obviously, the carrier needs 4G handsets as soon as possible to compete with flagship models from Sprint and T-Mobile.

AT&T is still mum on its LTE 4G network, and Sprint’s WiMAX 4G network (a competing standard to LTE) has been online for a few years. T-Mobile has dubbed its HSPA+ network 4G, even though AT&T currently regards that technology as a stop-gap between 3G and 4G.

I don’t know exactly why, but that lump of coal in your stocking used to terrify me as a kid:

“Goodness no! I forgot to feed the cats! Santa, I’m sorry!”

“AUUUGGHHH!!! I stole a piece of fruitcake! Why?! I don’t even like fruitcake!”

Nowadays I don’t worry so much, but still, it makes for a fun cartoon.

Obama praises the success of Apple?s Steve Jobs

President Obama praised Apple chief executive Steve Jobs as an example of someone who has lived the American Dream and earned his wealth.

Responding to a question from CBS reporter Mark Knoller, who asked about the divide between the middle class and the wealthy, Obama said it was a fact that the top 1 percent or even a smaller slice of the population have a larger proportion of the income share than at any time since the 1920s. Then he added that everyone should “have a shot at the American Dream.”

He added, “That should be what we?re focused on. How are we creating opportunity for everybody? So that we celebrate wealth. We celebrate somebody like a Steve Jobs, who has created two or three different revolutionary products. We expect that person to be rich, and that?s a good thing. We want that incentive. That?s part of the free market.”

The comments came as part of a discussion about the extension of the Bush tax cuts, which included tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. The President angered many Democrats by supporting the extension of the full range of cuts.

Obama actually met with Jobs in October to discuss the economy, innovation, technology and education. Jobs should realize that he has a historic opportunity to influence the President.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs also said, ?They discussed American competitiveness and education, especially reforms such as the president?s Race to the Top initiative. They then talked about energy independence and ways to increase job creation.?

There’s no question that Jobs has created a lot of jobs, since Apple’s ranks have swelled with the successes of the iPhone and iPad. Apple has also created returns for its shareholders. The subtext here is that Americans who don’t earn their wealth should be looked down upon.

Obama also brought up his conversation with 20 top CEOs on Dec. 16, when he met with likes of Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, and Intel CEO Paul Otellini.

“All of us have to be in a conversation with the private sector about what’s going to ensure that we can export and sell our products instead of just buying exports from someplace else,” Obama said. “How do we make sure that the green technologies of the future are made here in America? And how do we get all these profits that companies have been making since the economy recovered into productive investment and hiring? That’s a conversation that I had with the 20 CEOs who came here, and that’s a conversation I expect to continue in the months ahead.”

To save your phone from hackers, Lookout raises $19.5M

There’s a gold rush going on in security investments, and Lookout Mobile Security is cashing in on it. The smartphone security company is announced today it has raised $19.5 million in a third round of funding led by Index Ventures.

Security investments have been hot for a while since it’s clear that, with the daily reports of malware attacks, users still need a lot more protection when it comes to cruising the internet. Lookout is positioning itself in one of the hottest parts of the market, mobile security.

San Francisco-based Lookout has seen its app grow from 100,000 users less than a year ago to more than 4 million today.

Many of those users download the free version of the app on the Android, BlackBerry or Windows Phone 7 platforms. But the company is having success upgrading users to a $3-a-month premium service that includes features such as Privacy Advisor, data backup, and missing-device locator, said John Hering, chief executive of the company, in an interview.

“Smartphones are the next computer for billions of consumers and it?s clear that, just as in the PC world, consumers and their phones need protection,? said Volpi.

During the past year, Hering said his company has seen mobile threats multiply from about four per 100 users to more than 10 per 100 users. The incidence of attacks aren’t as bad as they are on PCs yet, but they are growing.

One recent attack hit more than 1 million cell phones in China and resulted in $300,000 in damages per day. And a Trojan Horse attack disguised as a “movie player” app was released on the Android Market; it sent premium text messages and charged a user’s phone bill without notification. Also, in November, flaws in banking apps exposed the security of iPhone and Android users.

As for the gold rush, Hering said he believes that mobile security just set up its foundations as a business in 2010 and is poised for faster growth in 2011.

Meanwhile, global smartphone sales in the third quarter were up 96 percent from a year ago. With hundreds of thousands of apps, it’s harder to screen all of them properly. Hering noted the recent Wall Street Journal investigation that found lots of mobile apps routinely violate privacy policies by sending your phone’s data to advertisers.

The Lookout Privacy Advisor can protect users against that, he said. Lookout has been chronicling all of the things that apps do in its App Genome Project, largely because of concerns about what kinds of things apps do without notifying users.

“In the last six months or so, consumers have started to become aware of the privacy and security issues,” Hering said.

Lookout’s app is now on more than 400 mobile networks in 170 countries. But it still isn’t on the iPhone. Hering said the company is watching the iPhone closely and is encouraged at Apple’s recent relaxation of restrictions on apps.

Hering said the company was not actively soliciting funding and still has money in the bank from its last round. The company was founded in 2007 and has 50 or so employees. Hering said the company plans to hire as many as 50 people in 2011. Rivals include McAfee and Symantec. But the main challenge for the company at the moment is that most people don’t think they need mobile security.

Lookout’s introductory video is below.
